This module prepares students to apply their skills and knowledge to design issues and problems that are introduced in specific area of design in other modules in Design 11. Students use drawing or other ways of representing to communicate and clarify ideas. Activities which apply design principles are place in a cultural, historical, and/or environmental context.

Students acquire an understanding of the many environmental issues and forces which play a part in designing built environments. Project work provides opportunities to explore the interrelationship between humans and their environments, and focuses and students on the ethical, economic, practical and creative considerations that must be part of effective design solutions.

Communications design provides opportunities for students to work with tools and materials ranging from traditional to high-tech. Through a combination of project work and analysis, students develop an understanding of the strategies and features at work in powerful communications in a range of media.

Students undertake projects to develop products or prototypes that respond to real needs in the world beyond the classroom. Effective design solutions re quire students to conduct research and to balance the practical, material, creative, economic and environmental requirements in their design.

This module offers students considerable flexibility in developing learning experiences that both meet the needs of the individuals and give students practical experience in working with others in settings that resemble the workplace.
